Section 8 Course Elements

Video Notes.

Since this is a flipped class, we will do a lot of practice in class. In exchange, I need you to watch the videos before coming to class. You find the video links in the Learning Assignments. The class schedule outlines which videos I expect you to watch before each class.

I am asking you to take notes as you are watching. You can either print out the Video Notes I put on D2L or take notes in your own notebook. Before each exam, you will upload your notes to the corresponding D2L assignment. Alternately, you can show them to me during my office hours or you can schedule an appointment with me. The video notes are 5% of your grade.

MyLab Math.

We will use MyLab Math to practice in and out of class. If you do not finish it in class, you can finish it at home by the next Monday as shown in your Class Schedule. You can find each MyLabMath assignment in D2L Brightspace: \smaller[1]\url{https://online.pcc.edu}\larger[1] You will be signed in directly into the software after the initial setup. No extra sign in will be needed. You \textcolor{red}{\bf have to submit your MyLabMath assignments by the due date}, which you can see in our Class Syllabus. You will submit your MyLab Math answers online. For each problem you solve, you will receive points.

I highly recommend that you write each problem out on paper --- how you found the solution --- so that you can understand it when you review for the exams and final. Label each problem and section clearly and put it in your binder. That is how you build a great study guide

Quizzes.

There will be seven Quizzes. However, for each quiz there will be a practice quiz first. The practice quiz is called the "Quiz 1 High Score Sections 1.1 and 1.2", for instance, and you can take it as often as you like and your highest score will be recorded.

After you feel comfortable with the problems, you will take the "Quiz 1 One Chance Sections 1.1 and 1.2" in this example. For that quiz to count, you will need to write all your solutions out. For the quizzes, you'll write on your own paper. However, use the worksheet as a guide for the exams because it gives you additional instructions and questions, especially. After you are done, you will scan your written work into one pdf file and upload it to the corresponding assignment.

To scan your work, you can either use a traditional scanner or your cell phone. If you use your cell phone, however, you have to use a scanning app of which there are many. For instance free app Adobe Scan. That way I will be able to read it easily.

Think of your One Chance Quiz as a knowledge check that allows me to give you feedback on your work, including notation and overall presentation. It is important that you receive this feedback before taking the exams. The written work of your One Chance Quizzes will be returned to the same Assignments folder. See the Course Calendar for the weeks that quizzes will be assigned. They are always due at 2:30 pm on Mondays.

You find both quizzes each week in D2L, which will bring you to MyLab Math. Scroll all the way to the bottom of your assignment list. You can start a Highest Score Quiz as often as you like. However, the One Chance Quiz you can only start once. After starting a quiz, you will have the full time to complete it.

Exams and Final.

There will be two exams and one final. Each student will work on their exams and final by themselves during class. If you are eligible for time extensions on in-class tests or other accommodations, please talk to me during the first week of term.

You will find your exams and the final also on MyLab Math. For each of them, you will also be provided a pdf in D2L that you can either print out or use as a model of how to write out your work, just like you will have been practicing with your quizzes. You will then upload your written work within 15 minutes of submitting your final.

Points will be given for correct answers, showing your work, proper solution steps, and readability. No or one point will be given if work is not shown but the solution is correct} unless otherwise noted on the test.

The exams and final are cumulative, which means that there can be problems of everything that has been covered up to that point. If you cannot make it to class that day, it will be available to you from Friday on and then will close on Wednesday at the end of class.

I do expect you to complete your exams and final on your own without any help from people, books, notes, or the internet. If I notice otherwise, you will receive no points for your exam. Please show me what you can do and have learned.

Late Work & Make-up Policy.

You may request extensions of WeBWorK assignments, Quizzes, and Exams once each anytime before their deadline.

For all extension requests, please state clearly which new deadline you are requesting. Bear in mind that you still need to finish everything by finals week so don't push deadlines out too far. However, I will accept all requests.

For Discussions, I highly recommend that you participate while they are happening. You will get so much more out of this course.

If you need any additional extensions, please email me to set up a phone or Zoom meeting so we can discuss how you can best get back on track with your assignments. And then I will be happy to give you another extension.

The most important thing is that you communicate with me by emailing me if you are experiencing any challenges in your life and/or studies. I will work with you as best as I can to support you in finishing our class successfully.
