Section 9 Course Elements
Attendance.
This is a 10-week course to support you in your fall term classes and/or prepare for your winter term math classes. So make sure you schedule plenty study time each week to complete your 25 hours in ALEKS. That translates into 2 hours 30 minutes per week in ALEKS. I recommend that you join us in our Zoom Classroom each Tuesday and Thursday 6 pm, say hello to me and each other, and enjoy getting started on your math together with your classmates. If you encounter a question, you can just click the "Ask for Help" button and I will join you in your breakout room and will be happy to answer. You can also ask anytime for a one-to-one conversation.
I recommend that you keep track of your time using your class schedule. I will also give you feedback, using Grades in D2L and email. You can see directly in ALEKS how many hours you have completed.
Just logging into ALEKS is not enough. You need to work on math consistently in ALEKS for the hours to count. If you are stuck and don't know what to do, please ask me during class either in our Zoom room or by calling me on my office phone (971) 722-4179. You are also welcome to schedule a one-to-one meeting with me any time.
If you look at the "Activity" or "Time and Topic" Reports in ALEKS, your blue bar should match the height of your grey bar at the least. If the blue bar is shorter, you need to ask more questions. So please reach out to me by unmuting yourself in Zoom, by clicking the "Ask for Help" button, by sending me a chat when I'm in the same Zoom breakout room as you are, or by giving me a call.
ALEKS.
We will use the software ALEKS in this class. To register, please follow the instructions in the file ``ALEKS registration ALC''. You will find your course code in Grades. The ALEKS website is: https://aleks.com 1 .
In order to support your learning better, I'm asking you to meet with me once a week. During that check-in, you can show me your written notes and ask me any questions you have.
Knowledge Checks.
ALEKS adapts to what you know already and only has you go over material that you are ready to learn. For that reason, it will start with an initial Knowledge Check to see what you know already. It is important to do your best on it. However, please do not get help because then you will not get a chance to learn the material yourself. Once you start working and learning, you will be given further Knowledge Checks and you will start to see your Knowledge Pie grow.
Late Work & Make-up Policy.
If you get sick or there are other reasons why you cannot attend class and complete your hours in ALEKS during a particular week, make sure you set time aside the next week to make up those hours. That way they will not build up.
For all extension requests, please email me the day and time when you will make up your hours. That will help you to stay on track.
The most important thing is that you communicate with me by emailing me if you are experiencing any challenges in your life and/or studies. I will work with you as best as I can to support you in finishing our class successfully.
