Math in Society: Mathematics for liberal arts majors

Preface Introduction to this Book

Many important decisions in life can be made more effectively using quantitative information and logic. The goal of this book and course is for you to feel more comfortable and confident with mathematical tools that are applicable to your life now and in the future. We will work with proportions for scaling, rates for comparing quantities, and financial tools for managing money and taxes. We will learn about statistics for decisions that involve data, probability for decisions with uncertain events, and methods for fair group decision-making like apportionment and voting systems. By practicing with these methods, we hope you’ll feel more empowered to use math to help you make the best decisions for yourself in college and beyond.
