Reading: Chapter 4 (4.1-4.5)
Powerpoint slides for Chapter 4

This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts associated with networks and the Internet. It begins by introducing basic network concepts (classifications, client/server model, etc.) and explaining how routers are used to link networks into internets. It then discusses the Internet's structure (domains, gateways, addressing, name servers, etc.), some fundamental Internet applications (email, FTP, and telnet), and concepts underlying the Web (HTML, XML, client-side versus server-side processing). An optional section covers the application-transport-network-link hierarchy and an elementary look at TCP, UDP, an IP. The final section discusses security issues.
