Intracrater Hike
Just for fun or for no other reason at all, you can take a short hike inside a crater valley and see a vast array of features. A good place to walk off the beaten path in Diamond Craters is in the Central Crater Complex, in the center of the outstanding natural area, just north of the main road. Inside the valley you will find everything from flow of basalt cooled up into vertical walls, to cracks in the flows as deep as 30 feet, which sometimes contain ice preserved from the past winter. Also visible in this area are many lava pipes, some reaching as high as 15 feet, from which magma has spewed out. The last picture on the right shows a lava pipe.
