Homework: Week 1

Study goal for the week: Start reading in Academic Encounters (AE). Review reading techniques, strategies, and vocabulary.

Tuesday:
  • Academic Encounters: Buy the book. Review the book to learn how it is organized (pages iv - xvi). Preview the first reading - complete pages 1-9 in the textbook (not to turn in).
  • Read and review the syllabus completely. There will be a quiz on this next time: predict questions that might appear on the quiz. Write FIVE POSSIBLE QUIZ QUESTIONS on your own paper and bring these to class to turn in.

  • Read the newspaper “News for You." Read “California Wildfire Breaks Record” and “Open Offices Don’t Work as Planned” in detail. Read at least 3 times and note any questions you have about the meaning or vocabulary - highlight difficult words. There will be quiz questions on these reading Thursday !

 

 

Thursday:
  • Academic Encounters: On your own paper, write the answers to these questions on page 3: "Choose one or two countries and answer the following questions about each one. 1) Who makes the laws? 2) Are there any important historical documents? What are they?" Of course you may discuss your own country, but please consider also writing about any country that you learned about in today's discussion. your grade will be higher for a more complete answer. Grammar, spelling and format are all part of your grade.
    Turn this paper in next class.
  • Also due Tuesday next week: Write five true-false questions that might make good quiz questions. Base all questions on Reading 2 (page 11-12).

    Learn the affixes on Affix Handout 1. The quiz next week will cover some of these.

  • AE: Complete pages 10-15. We will do some of these activities in class, but you should still review them at home.

  • Review the reading vocabulary (link on main page).
