I went through the courses before you switched over and i just want to say that C++ is a much more practical language. As a Linux/Unix programmer i spend most if not all of my time programming in C++. With my continued work in the CS series i can also say that the background that C++ provided me by allowing me to get down at a lower level with C++ and that gave me a better understanding of assembler concepts. I think it's nice to offer a java class for people who already know how to program but for beginning students, I don't think the language has evolved enough so good text and reference books can be selected. The 161 class I had last term was one of the most frustrating classes I've ever had. The book was terrible and the content of the class was not in line with what I expected to learn. None of my CS classes do. Why is this? I live in central portland. It takes me 1:15 mins to get to sylvania and 1:35 mins to get to rock creek. This is incredibally inconveniant. It's been detremental to my attendance, grades and education too have to travel so far to get to school. Why not more CS classes in the city of portland, like SE or cascade? mark |

Seriously, though- I think that keeping C++ as the language to be learned in CS161/162 gives a very solid foundation to build from. JAVA has some very definite quirks, depending on what platform it's on (From my user's standpoint, anyway.) While I feel it's a good language, I also think it's more along the lines for emphasis on a web design or web-building type of curriculum. That should be separate (and is) from Computer Science. |
