Does
Software Promote Violence? (pg
1.15)
One of today's more popular computer games is Grand Theft Auto. In the game, players advance through the mafia by
conveying secret packages,
following alleged snitches, and other similar activities. Since its release, buyers have purchased more than three
million copies of Grand Theft
Auto. Proponents praise the game's vivid graphics, edgy characters, and wide range of allowable
behaviors. Critics condemn the game's explicit violence and the
rewards it gives players for
partaking in illegal acts. Grand Theft Auto is rated M (for Mature, meaning it is suitable for ages 17 and
older), but children as
young as 12 are familiar with it. Even worse, opponents fear that the game's popularity may influence future
developers of computer
games aimed at younger children. What impact do violent computer games or games that promote unacceptable acts
have on individual behavior?
Do these games desensitize players to violence or increase aggression?
