Course Description: This course introduces technical and professional communications. We will review various technical formats (e.g., definitions, instructions, specifications, etc.) while focusing on the writing process. Activities will include lecture, class discussion, research, in-class and out-of-class writing, collaborative activities and lab work. Students will complete and submit technical projects and presentations, and participate in group activities. Prerequisite: WR 122/WR 214.

Texts:  Handbook of Technical Writing  by Alred, Brusaw and Oliu (Required); The Quick and Easy Guides for Writers by George Knox (Required) Available on-line at  http://wr227.tripod.com/guides.htm, The Bedford Handbook for Writers by Diana Hacker (Recommended); Additional material will be provided in class or on-line.

Projects and Assignments: Descriptions and due dates for projects and assignments are listed on the "Assignments" handout and on the web site. Additionally, all students are required to complete the assigned reading and on-line lessons.

Grading: Grading will be based on a point system. The maximum number of points available in the course is 200. The following scale will be used to assign the final grade:  A = 180+ Points; B = 160-179 Points; C = 140-159 Points; D = 120-139 Points

Point Distribution:  Weekly Assignments (60 pts.); Group Activities (40 pts.); Technical Project (80 pts. paper; 20 pts. presentation)

All written assignments should be submitted on or before the due date by e-mail, mail or in person. Late submissions will be penalized.

Attendance: Students who miss more than one class will receive a "No Pass". Students missing one class will be responsible for any assignments due and for any in-class work. Make-up work should be arranged with the instructor as early as possible in the term. An "Incomplete" will only be given for verified illness or emergency. Conflicts should be brought to the instructor's attention as soon as possible.

Student-Instructor Conferences: Students are encouraged to meet with the instructor twice during the term to assess their progress in the class. Meetings will be arranged individually throughout the term.
