Syllabus

Course Description: This course introduces technical and professional communications. We will review various technical formats (e.g., definitions, instructions, proposals, etc.) while focusing on the writing process. Activities will include readings in the text, on-line readings, on-line discussions, weekly writing assignments and a technical project and presentation. Prerequisite: WR 122/WR 214.

Writing for the Technical Professions (3rd Ed.) by Kirstin R. Woolever (Required)
The Bedford Handbook for Writers by Diana Hacker (Recommended)
Additional material will be provided at the course web site.

Projects and Assignments: Descriptions and due dates for projects and assignments are listed on the web site. Additionally, all students are required to complete the assigned reading and on-line discussions.

Grading: Grading will be based on a point system. The maximum number of points available in the course is 200. The following scale will be used to assign the final grade:

A = 180+ Points

B = 160-179 Points

C = 140-159 Points

D = 120-139 Points

Point Distribution:

Weekly Assignments (70 pts.)
On-line Discussions (30 pts.)
Technical Project (100 pts.)

All written assignments should be submitted on or before the due date by e-mail, mail or in person. Late submissions will be penalized.

Participation: Students who fail to complete all required work will receive a "No Pass". An "Incomplete" will only be given for verified illness or emergency. Conflicts should be brought to the instructor's attention as soon as possible.

Accommodation: Students needing accommodation should notify the instructor prior to or on the first day of class. Special arrangements will be made as soon as possible.

Assignments & schedules may be changed due to institutional, weather or class concerns.
