Course Description: This course will present techniques and strategies used in expository and persuasive writing. Activities will include lecture, class discussion, research, in-class and out-of-class writing, collaborative activities and lab work. Students will compose essays providing evidence supporting a thesis. Students will also demonstrate appropriate writing mechanics (grammar, style, etc.) and citation methods in these essays.

Readings and Assignments: Descriptions and due dates for readings and assignments are listed on the Readings and Assignments handout and on the web site. Additionally, all students are required to participate in class discussions and student-instructor conferences.

Grading: Grading will be based on a point system. The maximum number of points available in the course is 200. The following scale will be used to assign the final grade:

A = 180+ Points

B = 160-179 Points

C = 140-159 Points

D = 120-139 Points

Point Distribution:

All written assignments should be submitted on or before the due date by e-mail, mail or in person. Late submissions will be penalized.

Attendance: Students who miss more than one class will receive a "No Pass". Students missing one class will be responsible for any assignments due and for any in-class work. Make-up work should be arranged with the instructor as early as possible in the term. An "Incomplete" will only be given for verified illness or emergency. Conflicts should be brought to the instructor's attention as soon as possible.

Student-Instructor Conferences: Students are required to meet with the instructor twice during the term to assess their progress in the class. Meetings will be arranged individually throughout the term.

Accommodation: Students needing accommodation should notify the instructor prior to or on the first day of class. Special arrangements will be made as soon as possible.
