CG 280 Cooperative Education Seminar
Activity: Asking for a Raise
Money - specifically, how much you are paid for the work you do - can be
a very uncomfortable topic in the workplace, especially if you feel you
deserve to be paid more than you currently are. How and when you
discuss it with your supervisor, and the plan that you’ve developed (or,
more often the case, that you’ve not developed), can make or break your
success in receiving a raise.
Assignment:
Visit the website http://www.hardatwork.com/Escalator/raise.html.
Here you will find a detailed description of what research and leg work
you need to do before meeting with your supervisor, as well as strategies
about what to say when you have a face-to-face meeting with your boss.
Then prepare a hypothetical case for a raise in your current position.
Investigate your organization’s compensation policies, decide which accomplishments
your supervisor values, make a list of accomplishments you’ve achieved,
and write out your case for deserving a raise. Describe the scenario
when you would present this information to your supervisor.
