Course Assignments

All BA 280B students must complete a journal or summary paper, and an informational interview to receive a passing grade. Students must also complete five (5) additional assignments, described below.

Choose five assignments from this menu. Topics include job search, job success and personal growth. Each activity includes a web site to explore and a required assignment. Check "Submitting Homework" for due dates and other information.

Job Search Topics

Self Assessment Assignment: Complete one of the on-line personality/aptitude tests. Summarize the findings and write a response to specific aspects of your assessment results. Do you agree with the results? How will you use this information? (Note: You do not need to complete all of the "Activities" on the "Assessment" web page.)
Researching Markets, Companies & Jobs  Assignment: Develop a corporate profile for a company you have researched on the web. Include company name, address, phone, products/services, and any career related information you have discovered. Try to find a company contact. (Note: You do not need to complete all of the "Activities" on the "Research" web page.)
Resumes Assignment: Develop a draft resume. Remember to keep it focused on skills and abilities. Try to keep it to one page in length. Read both the general guide and business-specific materials found on Employment Quest.
Job Interviews Assignment: Read the web page for interviewing tips and strategies. Choose five (5) Sample Questions and write brief (one paragraph) answers to each. .(Note: You do not need to complete all of the "Activities" on the "Interviewing" web page.)
Lawful and Unlawful Employment Inquiries Assignment: Review a list of pre-employment inquires. Copy/print the list and mark each question as "lawful" or "unlawful". Write an appropriate response to two (2) "unlawful" questions. (What would you say to an employer who asked these questions?)
Portfolios Assignment: Review the suggestions for portfolio development and mini-portfolios. Create a mini-portfolio including a cover, an introductory piece (e.g., resume) and 4 - 5 samples of your work. 
Salary Negotiation Assignment: Your assignment is to: 1) Identify the mid salary range for an occupation of your choice in Oregon; 2) List your marketable skills and experiences to be used in your salary negotiation; 3) Describe the strategies you would use to convey the information you identified in 1 and 2 of this assignment.

Job Success Topics

Job Success Skills Assignment: Analyze your own Job Success Skills relating to employer expectations, communications, getting along with others and personal qualities.
Safety on the Job Site Assignment: Answer questions about workplace safety listed on the web page using various web resources provided.
Asking for a Raise Assignment: Prepare a case for receiving a raise at work, using guidelines provided.
Sexual Harassment Assignment: Define sexual harassment and identify appropriate actions. Also, find two additional websites related to sexual harassment.
Work at Fifty and Beyond Assignment: Identify challenges and strategies for career success. Targets workers in the 50+ age group. Assignment: Identify challenges and strategies for career success. Targets workers in the 40+ age group.

Personal Growth Topics

Budgets Assignment: Prepare a personal budget for your present situation. Also, find and write a review of a budget-related web site.
Stress Management Assignment: Complete a brief Stress and Coping Inventory. List your current stressors and develop possible coping strategies.
Technology and Your Future Assignment: Learn about new and upcoming technologies, and discuss their relevance to your future life at work and home.
Web Article Review Assignment: Find and review an on-line career-related article. Also, find a web magazine or resource you would recommend to other students for career research.

Grading

BA 280B is graded "Pass/No Pass".  Remember, you must complete five (5) menu assignments, as well as the journal and informational interview, to receive a "Pass".   An "Incomplete" or "CIP" will only be given for verified emergencies.
 

Submitting Homework

Please submit all assignments before Finals Week.  (Check with your instructor for specific dates.) Homework may be submitted via e-mail (gbarrick@pcc.edu), FAX (503-977-8129) or delivered to the Sylvania Cooperative Education office (Syl CC 221).  If you have any questions about the homework, please contact your instructor.
