Welcome to WR 227, Technical Writing I

This course will introduce you to the basic formats and techniques of technical writing.  As you work through the course, you will learn about various kinds of technical documents including product descriptions, instructions, proposals, analytical reports and even web pages.  You'll have a chance to practice and develop your technical writing skills through research, drafting and revising documents.  We'll even have a chance to discuss writing issues, both as a class and individually.

Navigating the Course

You should find icons on the main page with important links: Syllabus, Announcements, Assignments, Class E-mail, Discussions, and Instructor Info. (You can also navigate using the menu bar to the left.)  Start with the Syllabus and read the course requirements. The Course Schedule on the Assignments page will give you a good overview of the course. Take some time to explore the class during the first week.  If you have any questions or problems, email me at gknox@pcc.edu or call me at (503)977-4475.

Readings, Assignments and Activities

The Assignments page has links to the Course Schedule, Projects & Assignments, and Submitting Work.  The Course Schedule lists all required readings and assignments by week.  Please note that assignments are listed for the week they are due.  The Projects & Assignments page gives detailed descriptions of the work required for this class.  It also provides information on where to find additional guidelines or samples.  All assignments listed are required and must be submitted on or before the due date.  The Submitting Work page describes the four ways you can submit work to me.  Please note that for e-mail submission, I would like you to use the Class E-mail.  This e-mail is accessible from the course homepage.  You may send attachments using this tool.

Announcements and Communication

I will be making announcements to the class throughout the term.  These will be posted on the Announcements page and/or e-mailed to class members via Class E-mail.  If you need to contact me privately, you may do so using the Class E-mail, PCC e-mail (gknox@pcc.edu) or phone (503-977-4475).  I also have an office at the Sylvania campus, CC 221.

While I do not have "office hours" for this class, I can usually be reached at the above e-mail or phone.  I will be checking the Class E-mail regularly.  (I know for certain that I'll be checking e-mail on Fridays; that's when your homework is due.)  You can also schedule a meeting or phone conference.

Again, welcome to WR 227.  I think you'll find this an interesting and challenging course.
