Important Class Information: Summer quarter is short so the pace of this class is fast. This web course can be completed entirely through distance learning using an online class website with course materials. The online component is delivered using the software "Desire2Learn". You will not be required to be on-campus, but you will need to read the text book, post at least two (2)times to each discussion board assignment, and complete projects and quizzes by logging into to the PCC Desire2Learn website each week. I will be communicating with students primarily through the class web site, however some communication will be through email. To be successful in this course check the web site at least 2 times a week.

PCC Helpdesk: If you have any technical difficulties with Desire2Learn software please contact the PCC Help Desk at 971.722.8200 or outside the Portland area call 1-866-922-1010 ext. 8200, or click here for the PCC Student Support Web Page Your Password is typically your Student ID number (your "G" number).

Course Descriptions: This course provides broad based and balanced coverage of both the business and technology elements of eCommerce. This course presents concepts and skills for the strategic use of e-commerce and related information system technologies. Provides a framework for the analysis of e-commerce solutions to issues surrounding business-to-business, business to consumers, and intra-organizational trade. Includes study of network, database and programming concepts and examination of e-commerce in altering the structure of entire industries, and how it affects business processes including electronic transactions, supply chains, decision making and organizational performance.  Please note that this is not a programming or web development course. PCC offers many other classes that focus on programming and web development.

Recommended prerequisite knowledge and/or skills:

A willingness to take charge of your own learning. Taking a Web class is much like a 'guided' independent study. Materials are provided for you to read and review; it is up to you to study them, participate in any discussion and activities, complete assignments and take online quizzes. You have control over when you do your work each week, but you also have the responsibility to get the work done without the structure of a classroom meeting. This is very challenging for some people. You must 'attend' class each week - you'll need to read the text book, take quizzes, turn in assignments, read e-mail, check the Discussion Board, and pace yourself over any projects.

Be familiar and comfortable with your computer and internet and have basic computer skills equivalent to CIS 120 and/or BA 131. This class does not require programming or extensive web development skills, however students should know how to browse and search the web for information, how to create simple web pages, and how to upload files to the Internet. If you do not have this experience, this class will require some independent work to learn these skills.

College level communications skills and basic math skills.

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

Required Text - Electronic Commerce, 10th edition  by Gary Schneider ISBN 13: 9781133526827

Optional Supplement: HTML and CSS, Visual Quickstart Guide Approx. $25- 40

Computer:  Use your own computer or work in one of PCC's computer labs.

Discussion Board Assignments: Students are encouraged to interact with other students in the class and required to post at least 2 times per discussion to the Discussion Board.

Web Assignments: Students may complete e-Commerce related assignments and/or projects in this class to be uploaded to the PCC student web server. Students may use any web page creation program, including text-based programs for HTML or WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) programs such as Dreamweaver, MS Expression Web, etc. There will be more information about this in the class. Please note: It is not difficult to create web pages, but I will not be "teaching" you how to create  web pages in this class. If you have not made a web page before there are lots of online tutorials available (links to tutorials are provided) and you can also get hands-on help, if needed, from one of the free tutors who are available in the CIS lab and the CRCs at the PCC campuses. You will also need an SFTP program such as FileZilla, which is a free download for students. Other hardware and/or software may be needed. You will upload each part assigned to a web server using SFTP. The assignments must be uploaded and functional on the web for credit.

Quizzes and Exams: There is a short required quiz over each chapter to assess your understanding of the concepts taught in the class. There is an optional midterm and optional final that are very similar to the quizzes. All quizzes and exams are open book/notes and are timed and will consist of multiple choice and true-false questions.

Due Dates- All quizzes and discussion board postings  and other assignments are to be completed and submitted by the due date and time. Students may complete the quizzes ahead of the due date, however nothing will be accepted after the due date. Discussion board assignments must be completed in the week assigned. Late work is not fair to me or to the students who work hard to get things completed on time. Plan enough in advance so that any problems may be addressed in time. If you are having difficulties meeting deadlines, please contact me prior to the due date, as I may be able to help.

E-mail - You can send email through Desire2Learn to your instructor (DeLyse Totten) and to other students in this class. E-mail sent to the instructor is typically checked at least two times per week. Email is typically responded to just after it is read, but it may take longer at times.

Academic Honesty: Academic honesty is a course requirement. By enrolling in this course you agree that your answers to homework, quizzes and exams will be you own work (except for assignments that explicitly permit collaboration), that you will not make solutions to homework, quizzes or exams available to anyone else. This includes both solutions written by you, as well as any official solutions provided by the instructor or through other course materials, and that you will not engage in any other activities that will dishonestly improve your results or dishonestly improve/hurt the results of others. See PCC's Academic Integrity Policy.

Misconduct: -If you engage in any misconduct – such as giving or receiving help during an exam; removing test materials or exams; impersonating another or other forms of cheating; failing to follow the instructor’s directions; failing to follow other class requirements, policies or procedures – you may be subject to penalties, including voiding assignment and exam results.

Special Needs: Any student who feels she or he may need accommodation for a disability should make arrangements with me to discuss your request before the end of the first week of the term. Students requesting accommodations must provide documentation of disability to PCC's Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) phone: 971-722-4341; and provide the Approved Academic Accommodations letter to the Instructor.  OSD may also be able to provide information about technologies that help people with disabilities in taking Web based hybrid and distance-learning classes.

Grade Policies:  Your final course grade will depend on the instructor's evaluation of your overall course performance, including the instructor's assessment of your understanding of the course material and your mastery of the course outcomes. However, the following approximate guidelines are provided for your information. Regular participation via the discussion board is expected and is factored into your grade.

Grade:

A

90-100%

B

80-89%

C

70-79%

D

60-69%

F

Below 60

AUD - An audit grade (enrolling in the course without receiving grade or credit for the course) may be given to students who participate on a regular basis and who make a written request for a grade of audit at the beginning of the term.

P/NP - Pass/ no pass is a grade option open to certain students who are not seeking a certificate or degree taking certain PCC courses.  A student must earn a letter grade of C or better to receive a pass. Students who want a P/NP grade must select this option at the beginning of the term.

I - A grade of I (incomplete) is not an option.  If you have problems completing the course work, due to circumstances beyond your control, we can discuss setting up a contract to complete the work.  The initial grade recorded will be the grade earned at the completion of the term.  Upon completion of course work, a grade change will be submitted, if the completed work causes a change.  An incomplete contract must be set up on an individual basis. For more information on grades see PCC Grading Policies.

IW - It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from the class if the student does not want to complete it; however a student may be denied entry to the class if the student does not log in to the class by the third day of the quarter and/or if the student stops participating in the class.  To avoid this please make prior arrangements with me if believe you will miss 2 or more assignments. Please note that this is not an automatic option.  If you stop participating and have not withdrawn yourself, you may be assigned either a grade based on your work through the last day of attendance or be institutionally withdrawn at my option. See the PCC Adding and Dropping page to learn more about the last date to drop or withdraw from PCC courses.

I want you to learn and be successful in this course.  If you feel discouraged, concerned, or something unexpected develops during the term that interferes with your learning, please let me know.
