Important Class Information: This class includes
online content and assignments. The online component is delivered
using the PCC supported D2L Brightspace software as well as the textbook
publisher software, Cengage MindTap. You will not be required to be
on-campus, but you will need to read the text and other notes, post at
least two times to each the discussion board assignment and complete graded
homework, quizzes and exams by logging into to the PCC D2L Brightspace
website and to
the textbook publisher Cengage MindTap website each week. I will be
communicating with students primarily through the D2L Brightspace class
website, however some communication will be through email. To be successful in this course,
students should check the two class web sites at least 2 times a
week and complete homework and discussion assignments, quizzes and exams by
the due date.
Course Descriptions: This course discusses
fundamental concepts, principles, and rules of law that apply to business
transactions. This includes the function and operation of the courts, tort
law, and contract law. Business Law is designed to expose the student to
the American Legal System and its effect on business activities. The course
provides the student information about the difference between trial courts
and appellate courts, public law and private law, civil law and criminal
law. Other topics may include: legal procedure, computer and
intellectual law, business crimes, tort and contract law, and sales of
goods. The course may include answering questions, taking quizzes and
exams, completing case exercises, discussion board assignments,
participation and other assignments.
Prerequisite knowledge and/or
skills:

|
A willingness to take charge of your own learning. It is up to you to
study materials, participate in discussions and activities, complete
assignments and home work and quizzes and exams.
|

|
College level communications skills. Communication
skills are essential for any college level class.
WR
115, RD 115, and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores required.
|
Learning Outcomes After successfully completing
this course, students should be able to:

|
Demonstrate an understanding of the legal environment of business.
|

|
Apply basic legal knowledge to business transactions.
|

|
Communicate effectively using standard business and legal
terminology.
|
The learning outcomes
listed in this syllabus are those actions that a student who successfully

Due Dates- All assignments,
including exams, quizzes, review questions, case exercises and any other
work are to be completed and submitted by the due date and time. Late work
is not fair to me or to the students who work hard to get things completed
on time. Plan enough in advance so that any problems may be addressed in
time. If you are having difficulties meeting deadlines, please contact me prior
to the due date, as I may be able to help. The instructor reserves the right
to modify course content and/or substitute assignments and learning
activities in response to institutional, weather, class situations or
other.
Participation-
To foster a
student-friendly learning environment students are
encouraged to participate by interacting with other students in the class
and are required to post to Discussion Board assignments. This class is merged
with another section of the same class. By attending this course you are
giving permission for students registered in CRNs 10451 and 10452 to know
that you are in the course and students enrolled in both sections of this
class will be able to see discussion board posts. Before you post or email
something, please consider whether you would say it in the classroom. I
expect that you will treat me and other students with the utmost of
courtesy and professionalism. This is an adult learning environment and I
expect that everyone will handle it responsibly.
Students
who wish to make an auditory or visual recording or to capture any sort of
image or sound of any portion of the class must speak with the instructor
ahead of time. Any such recording or capture is for personal use only and
may only be used in a way consistent with academic policy. It may not be
shared, copied, uploaded to the Internet, and/or distributed without
written permission from the instructor as well as any other students in the
class or who appear in an image or who are heard.
Homework, Quizzes and Exams: There
are required homework assignments, quizzes and exams to assess your
understanding of the concepts taught in the class. Quizzes and exams will
include multiple choice and/or true-false questions.
Feedback
on work- Typically feedback on your work will include the
grade earned and periodic written comments.
E-mail
Communication:
You can send email to your instructor (DeLyse Totten) and to other students
in this class. E-mail sent to the instructor is typically checked at least
two times per week. I usually respond right after email is checked, but it may
take longer at times.
Academic Honesty: Academic honesty is a course requirement. By
enrolling in this course you agree that your answers to homework, quizzes
and exams will be you own work (except for assignments that explicitly
permit collaboration), that you will not make solutions to homework,
quizzes or exams available to anyone else. This includes both solutions
written by you, as well as any official solutions provided by the
instructor or through other course materials, and that you will not engage
in any other activities that will dishonestly improve your results or
dishonestly improve/hurt the results of others. See PCC's
Academic Integrity Policy.
Misconduct:
If
you engage in any misconduct, such as giving or receiving help during an
exam; removing test materials or exam notes; impersonating another;or other
forms of cheating; failing to follow the instructor’s directions; failing
to follow other class requirements, policies or procedures; or using books,
unapproved calculators or computers, headsets, listening devices, paging
devices (beepers), cellular phones, recording or photographic devices,
papers of any kind, or other aids, you may be subject to penalties, including
voiding assignments and exam results.
Special
Needs:
Any student who feels accommodation for a disability is needed should make
arrangements with me to discuss your request before the end of the first
week of the term. Students requesting accommodations must provide
documentation of disability to PCC's Disability Services Office phone: 971-722-4341; and provide the Approved
Academic Accommodations letter to the Instructor.
Grade Policies: Your final
course grade will depend on the instructor's evaluation of your overall
course performance, including the instructor's assessment of your
understanding of the course material and your mastery of the course
outcomes. However, the following approximate guidelines are provided for
your information. The course grade may be calculated on a weighted basis by
category to include homework, quizzes, exams and discussion assignments. To
be successful in the course substantive work must be completed in each category: exams,
homework, quizzes and discussion assignments.. Regular participation is
expected and is factored into your grade.

Note:
For all business courses (BA designation), including BA 226, the only grade
option will be a letter grade basis only. Pass / No Pass is not a grade option for BA courses.
AUD
- An audit grade (enrolling in the course without receiving grade or credit
for the course) may be given to students who participate on a regular basis
and who make a written request for a grade of audit at the beginning of the
term.
I
- A grade of I (incomplete) is not an option. If you have
problems completing the course work, due to circumstances beyond your
control, we can discuss setting up a contract to complete the work.
The initial grade recorded will be the grade earned at the completion of
the term. Upon completion of course work, a grade change will be
submitted, if the completed work causes a change. An incomplete
contract must be set up on an individual basis. For more information on grades
see PCC Grading Policies.
IW
- It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from the class if the
student does not want to complete it; however a student may be denied entry
to the class if the student does not log in to the class by the third day
of the quarter and/or if the student stops participating in the
class. To avoid this please make prior arrangements with me if
believe you will miss 2 or more assignments. Please note that this is not
an automatic option. If you stop participating and have not withdrawn
yourself, you will likely be assigned a grade based on your work through
the last day of attendance. See the PCC Adding
and Dropping page to learn more about the last date to drop or withdraw
from PCC courses.
