A macrobiotic diet is based on the concept of yin and yang in Eastern philosophy and the natural balance of nature. For example, there is no meat in a macrobiotic diet. Because of the small number of teeth in our mouth used for chewing meat compared to the other kinds of teeth, macrobiotics believe that we are not designed to have meat in our diet. Sugar is also excluded from a macrobiotic diet. Brown rice, which requires a lot of chewing, is the primary food in the macrobiotic diet. This is because when we chew the rice, natural sugar is produced in the mouth. Therefore, we don't need sugar from other sources. Of course, vegetables, along with brown rice, are very common because of their rich supply of vitamins and other essential nutrients.
