Gerontology
Skills, Tools & Certifications

Gerontology is not a career field, but a specialty that is applied across multiple fields, including health care, social work, nutrition, financial advising, facility management, etc. (There is a good, long listing of applicable job titles here.) Because of this, it will be very important to target your skills statements to a specific job or job type. You will need to demonstrate your abilities in your specialty AND in the field where you will apply that specialty.

Use the following skills sets to draw from as they are relevant to a specific job:
Then customize the statements to emphasize your knowledge of the population you want to serve. Some examples:
  • "Coordinated care between health providers, patient, family members, and ancillary services."
  • "Advocated and assisted with a wide range of housing, health care, financial, and addiction issues for older clients."
  • "Acted as patient advocate and supported total patient care with medical and support team"
  • "Reviewed portfolios with clients to evaluate long-term financial goals such as retirement and long-term care costs."
  • "Provided in home hospice care including, but not limited to, activities of daily living, patient hygiene and pain control."
Of course, each job opening will require that you develop skills statements that target that particular job and organization. Use the job description (requirements, duties, etc.) to determine which and how many skills statements to include.
