Universal Design

Designing New and Remodeled Construction
Accessible to Everyone

Have you ever struggled moving a heavy appliance only to face a set of steps?  Have you ever tried lowering a full shopping cart down over a curb?  Universal design is the answer!

Universal design is incorporating architectural features, such as ramps, curb cuts, automatic door openers, and elevators, that accommodate everyone:  the woman pushing a stroller;  the elderly man who has difficulty climbing steps;  the child who uses a wheelchair;  the skier trying to ambulate on crutches;  the person pushing a heavy mail, computer, or television cart into the building.  Quite simply, universal design features are features that help  everyone.

If your business plans to remodel or undertake new construction, think of the customers, delivery persons, and employees alike who will benefit from your efforts to incorporate universal design into your architectural plans.

The following web sites will provide valuable guidance and information for the project architect, designer, and business committed to providing universal access.  The following standards provided at the web sites also meet ADA standards and requirements.
