Alternative Work Options

 

For some people, working full-time or five days a week may be difficult due to a medical condition, family needs, transportation problems or other personal circumstance.  A growing number of options are becoming available as more companies begin to offer their employees alternative work options when possible.

Let's take a look at some of these options....

 

Alternative work options might include:

 

A part-time work schedule in which an employee works less than 40 hours
per week.

 

A job share arrangement in which a full-time job is split between two 
co-workers by mutual agreement, and earnings and benefits are given 
in proportion to the number of hours each person works.

 

A flexible work schedule in which starting and ending times, the work-week
schedule, or the number of days worked per week are adjusted - without 
reducing the required number of work hours per week.

 

Telecommuting by working at home part of the work week instead of
the work site if essential job duties can be performed at home, direct
supervision is not required, and business needs and deadlines can
be met.

Telecommuting Advisory Council

This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting
telecommuting.

 

Teleworking by conducting all work for a company at home, often
via computer technology and telecommunications, if essential job
duties can be performed at home, direct supervision is not required,
and business needs and deadlines can be met.

Initiative
that addresses telework for people with disabilities.

Temporary employment assignments arranged through a temporary
employment agency in which workers are sent to various companies
to work on short-term job assignments.  Workers are employed and
paid by the temporary employment agency, not the company where
the work is done.  Workers usually have flexibility in choosing
temporary assignments offered.

or personal service provider, or by starting your own business.  For

     Braille Proofreader
  
  Braille Transcriptionist

Braille proofreaders and braille transcriptionists are needed!  This
is an opportunity to work from your home by contract or subcontract
arrangement.

The National Library Services for the Blind and Physically 
Handicapped of the Library of Congress offers a correspondence 
certification training program to individuals interested in becoming 
a braille proofreader or braille transcriber.  Braille proofreader training 
takes approximately 9-12 months, and braille transcriptionist training 
takes approximately 12-16 months.

A high school education is required.  Persons who are most 
successful at this type of work are highly detail-oriented and possess 
good proofreading skills.
