Milepost 8:  My Functional Work Skills Assessment
                       and Disability Considerations

At this stop, let's take a look at your functional work skills -- and possible considerations related to your disability.

As you begin exploring and considering careers, how might your disability affect or influence your career choices?  For you to make that determination, you'll need to gather as much information as possible about your disability.  This information will be very helpful, and important, as you begin mapping out your career plan.

As you'll discover down the road, every job or career position will have a list of required job duties called essential job functions.  These are the duties and tasks a person hired for the job must be able to do with or without reasonable accommodation.  In your early career planning stages, you'll want to carefully review job duty and task requirements for each career or job position you wish to explore.

As you review a job's essential functions and requirements, you'll need to ask yourself these questions:

Could I perform the essential job duties and tasks with or without reasonable accommodation?

What kind of accommodation would I need?

Would an accommodation be feasible?

Would the accommodation I need potentially pose an undue hardship for an
employer?

What duties might be difficult or impossible for me to do?

Would I, due to the nature of my disability, pose a direct threat to the health
or safety of others?

Would a job pose a threat to my own health or safety?

(In June, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that jobs that pose a threat to
the health or safety of a person with a disability can be a factor related to hiring).

As you can see, it will be important for you to:

  1. Become knowledgeable about your disability and accommodation needs;

  2. Become knowledgeable about job accommodations;  and

  3. Become knowledgeable about essential job functions (duty and task
requirements) for careers you wish to explore.

It sounds like a lot, but you'll get help in this Guide each step of the way!

Let's start by gathering information about your disability -- as it relates to specific work tasks and functions.

In the following assessment, Parts 1 - 6, you'll be given a list of work-related functional skills.  While keeping your disability in mind, try your best to determine if the functional skill presented is something you can realistically do in a job setting.  Try to be as honest as possible as this information will be particularly useful and important when you begin exploring careers.

Part 6:   My Functional Limitations Profile

Now, let's identify and summarize your next set of results!

Before we begin, please note the following....

For career planning and employment purposes, what you need to be able to identify and target are the work skill functional limitations related to your disability.  It's the functional limitation(s) that will determine what accommodation, if any, you might need, and if a job's essential functions (duties and task requirements) can be met with or without accommodation.

In other words, identifying the functional limitations will help guide you in determining if a particular career will be viable or not.  Much will depend on the job's essential requirements, and if a functional limitation can be reasonably accommodated.

For this reason, in the following summary profile, you will be asked to list those skills you identified as being difficult or not possible for you to do.  Again, this information will be very helpful when you begin exploring careers.

My Functional Limitations Profile

In each of the following categories, list those skills that you marked difficult or unable to do in Parts 1 - 4.

If you checked several items that resemble one another or are similar in nature, it's okay to simply group and label them by type.  For example, if you have difficulty with finger dexterity, handling items, and manual dexterity, you can simply write - "manual dexterity" or "working with my hands."
