About Me!

Hi!  I am Russ Erdman.  I have been involved with computers for several years. I recently finished a 15 month part-time internship at Intel as the Information Center Technician, maintaining a small computer lab and display area on the chip making process.

I teach part-time as an Adjunct Faculty member at Portland Community College at the Rock Creek, Sylvania and Cascade campuses.  My classes include introductory computer applications classes and computer concept classes plus some html courses.

Most of my life I have been in education.  This includes 20 years teaching Junior High Art, Social Studies, Technology/Industrial Arts, English and Math.  It was there that I first developed an interest in computers.  I worked with Commodore Amigas in my art classes, where students produced animated, color graphics.

I also spent 28 years in the Army Reserves, where I taught Supply courses, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical courses, Leadership courses, worked with site team for the Sixth Army Command and General Staff College and finished as the First Sergeant for the Army Reserve's Total Army School System at Fort Hunter-Liggett, California.

Now, I am retired from the Army and the State of Washington, so I have time to do volunteer work.  I work with tutoring English at my church, the Chinese Evangelical Church of Vancouver, with the Public Library's English conversation circles and at Clark College's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

In the summer of 2004, I went with Global Volunteers to teach English to high school students in Xian, China.  I loved it so much, I have been back to China five more times since then.  I went to visit friends I had made and to see Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Nanjing.  I spent Christmas 2005 in Kunming, Yunnan Province working with Chinese English teachers.  Kunming and all of China is wonderful.  The people are warm and friendly, the culture is incredible and the food is delicious.  I can't wait to go back.

My hobbies include sailing, Country Western dancing, stained, fused and etched glasswork, participating in the Portland chapter of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, traveling, working with computers, and doing construction work.  I have built two houses myself.  One house had an all brick exterior, with every window done in leaded or stained glass.  Unfortunately, I no longer own either one.   However, I recently bought a new home and, even though I did not get to build it, I got to choose tile, colors and carpeting.

I also spend time helping my elderly aunt, who is 92 years old.  This keeps me pretty busy.  So that's a little bit about me.

Favorite Vacation Place

Map of Europe
One of my favorite vacation places is Europe because that is where I have traveled to the most countries, where my heritage is from and where there is still much more to see. I want to see much more of Europe, but my favorite place is China.
Picture of the World
There are so many places, cultures and people to see in the world.
IT COULD TAKE A LIFETIME TO SEE THEM ALL!
Map of Asia
I have been to China five times since going to Xian, China in the summer of 2004 to teach English for three weeks. I love the country, the people, culture and food. I hope to go again very soon.
Map of the United States
Of course, there is still lots to see in the good old U.S. of A.

Favorite European City Map

Map of Paris, France
Paris, France is my favorite European city, of those I have visited.  There is much to see from the Louvre, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower to Jim Morrison's grave site.  It is a vibrant and bustling city, but I don't think I would want to drive there, at least not in a new car.  However, you can go anywhere on the Metro.

Houses I've built

The first house I built Stained glass dining room window of first house
When I built my first house, I wanted to have a new old house.  A house with the charm of an older home, but the modern plumbing, wiring, etc. of a new home.  The stained glass window was in the dining room.  I made leaded or stained glass windows for every window in the house to help achive the old look and feel.

The second house I built

I built my second house several years later and the building codes would not allow the actual windows to be stained glass.  They had to be double pained and vinyl due to the cost of wooden windows.  So the window style was more Colonial.  The interior still had coved ceilings, wide woodwork, six panel doors, oak floors and two wood burning fireplaces with mantles.

My Current Home

My current home.

This is my current home. It is nice, but, since I didn't get to build it, there are some features I would have done differently.  Also, I moved to another side of town and I am still getting used to the differences in the new area.
