Scam awareness, detection and investigation
-
Make sure the company has a phone number that you can call back.
-
Check with "Information" to see if that number belongs to the company.
-
Contact the Better Business Bureau, the police or the sheriff in the area
of the company you are about to deal with. Ask if there are any complaints
on file.
-
Check to see if the company has a pattern of complaints or pending litigation
with the city attorney or the state attorney general.
-
If you are sending a payment, try to send it to a physical address instead
of a P.O. Box number.
