Scam awareness, detection and investigation
  • Make sure the company has a phone number that you can call back.
  • Check with "Information" to see if that number belongs to the company.
  • Contact the Better Business Bureau, the police or the sheriff in the area of the company you are about to deal with. Ask if there are any complaints on file.
  • Check to see if the company has a pattern of complaints or pending litigation with the city attorney or the state attorney general.
  • If you are sending a payment, try to send it to a physical address instead of a P.O. Box number.
