Earthquake (Bolt) - Chapters 11, 12
1. Describe steps that you, as an individual, can take to protect yourself against an earthquake. Be realistic - you can make alterations to a house that you own more easily than to an apartment you rent.
2. a) What is a shake map?
b) Your book give the
web address for shake maps of alifornia. The web address for shake
maps in the Pacific Northwest is http://spike.geophys.washington.edu/shake/
. Check out the website and tell me:
i) the
date you looked at the web site
ii)
the location and magnitude of the most recent event
iii)
the location and magnitude of the most recent significant event
Magnitude 8 (Fradkin) - Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9
3. Grove Karl Gilbert attempted to determine
the amount of offset that occurred during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
a) Describe how he made his
determinations
b) What do you think is the
most likely amount of offset?
4. a) Describe the steps that the author has taken
to be prepared for an earthquake.
b) What steps does the author
feel he still needs to take to be prepared?
In Chapter 7, the author mentions the Pinnacles National Monument and the Geologic Trail Guide. If you would like to visit this area via a virtual field trip, please go to : http://www.cyberhikes.com/HPNM0102.HTM
5. Describe (and tell me which page you found this on) four examples of animal behavior that might be an earthquake precursor.
6. Do you think the media did a decent and adequate job of reporting on the Loma Prieta earthquake? (Cite examples with page numbers in your discussion).
7. What were some of the surprises associated with the Northridge earthquake (give me examples and page numbers)?
Handout: What did the animals know and when did they know it?
8. Describe two specific examples (type of animal and location) where animals appear to have "known" that an earthquake or tsunami was coming (and tell me if earthquake or tsunami).
9. Which animals (if any) did not appear to have "known" that the tsunami was coming?
Handout: India official blames quake scare on Oregon man's 'hogwash' alert
10. a) How does Mr. Park "forecast" earthquakes
(he is not actually forecasting, he claims to be predicting)?
b) How could you
go about trying to determine whether what he describes is possible (or
makes any sense at all)?
11. Look at the tables on earthquake frequency given at: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html . Knowing that most earthquakes will be located at plate boundaries and that large earthquakes are often followed by substantial aftershocks, discuss what you think is the likelihood that anyone would be able to "forecast" 100 earthquakes correctly over a period of a few years.
12. Given the limited information in the article,
what do you think is Mr. Park's motivation in alerting nations such as
India of his "forecasts"?
