Geology of the Pacific Northwest (3 credits)

Course Description: Introduces the regional geology of the Pacific Northwest with emphasis on Oregon geology.  Includes basic geologic principles, earth materials and geology of Pacific Northwest Provinces.  There is no prerequisite for this course.

Text: Geology of the Pacific Northwest, by Elizabeth L. Orr and William N. Orr, McGraw-Hill.

Exams:  There will be three lecture exams during the term.  In addition, there is a comprhensive final on Monday June 11, from 9:00am-11:00am.  The lowest of  the four exam scores is dropped.  Consequently.....

No make-up exams will be given.

Homework: There will be a nine homework assignments posted on the class web site.  They are due at the beginning of class on the dates given on the assignments (presently planned to be each Monday of class starting the second week of class).  No late homework will be accepted for ANY reason.  Your worst homework score will be dropped.

Grades:  Grading is done on a straight scale (90% and above = A, 80-89% = B,
70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, and below 60% = F).

Grades will be determined from performances on:
    3 lecture exams .......... 60%
    homework ................. 40%
 
Instructional withdrawal policy: Faculty may institutionally withdraw registered students who do not attend the first class session.  Faculty may institutionally withdraw all students who do not attend class during the first week of the course.  Subsequent to the first week, faculty may also institutionally withdraw students who stop attending.  This is completely at the discretion of the instructor and may occur through the end of the eighth week of the course (or equivalent).  Faculty must indicate the last date of attendance.  While faculty may institutionally withdraw non-attending students within the time limits specified above, ultimate responsibility for withdrawal from a course within the specified withdrawal guidelines resides with the student.

PCC policy allows students to request "Audit" status or a "Pass/No Pass" grade in lieu of a letter grade within the first three weeks of class.  If you wish to receive an audit or pass/no pass grade, you must submit a written request to me during the first three weeks of class.

I generally do not give "I" grades.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes.  Each student is responsible for all of the content of all of the classes, including lecture material which may not be in the text.  If you miss lecture or lab, then it is YOUR responsibility to learn the material covered.

Announcements:  The lectures may include announcements, scheduling of exams, changes in the tentative class schedule as well as material that is not included in the textbook.  You are responsible for ALL of the lecture content, whether you are present or not.
