Quoting and Paraphrasing

For each of the following, I’d like you to do the following:

  • Reproduce the quote, using the parenthetical information as a way to introduce (or follow) the quote with an attribution tag (e.g., says, argues, believes).  Follow it with a parenthetical reference if necessary.
  • Then, reproduce the quote, but do not introduce or follow the quote with attribution tags. Follow it with a parenthetical reference.
  • Then, paraphrase the quote, following it with a parenthetical reference.

1.         “Far fewer out-of-state students are choosing to attend Oregon colleges and universities.” (James Reynolds, The Oregonian, December 28, 2003, page C4)

2.         “College students nationally failed to vote in the 1996 election primarily because the outcome of the contest between President Clinton and challenger Robert Dole seemed very predictable to them.   The outcome of the 2004 election, on the other hand, is shaping up to be very much in question, and there is a high likelihood that they will participate in far greater numbers.”  (Professor Susan Gallagher, Princeton University, Journal of Student Services International, Spring 2004, pages 114-15)

3.         “Despite the ill-repute that athletics continues to have among the faculty on most college campuses, the fact is that sports—particularly the “big two” (football and basketball)--continue to be powerful magnets for legislative funding and alumni donations, and they continue to serve as the admission ticket to quality higher education for many minority students from poor families.”  (John Osborn, Athletic Director, Wampah State University, The Chronicle of Higher Education Online, October 27, 2004, http://www.chronicle.com/102704/Osborn.htm)

4.         “The high cost of college tuition, which has risen at a national average annual rate of 8% over the last ten years, remains the single largest barrier to college entry for young Americans from the working class.”  (Mary Infadima, Newsweek, November 1, 2004, page 28)
