            The Spider and the Wasp

            1.         What is the author’s main point in writing this essay?

 

            2.         What was the most interesting thing that you learned about the process by which the wasp reproduces?

 

            Miss U.S.A.

            1.         As is always the case in the oral histories of Studs Terkel, the entire essay is the individual talking about herself—in this case, her experience as Miss U.S.A.  How does Emma Knight come across?  What kind of person does she seem to be?

 

            2.         What kind of judgment do you think Emma is making about beauty pageants?  Is she opposed to them or in favor of them?  Why do you say that?

 

            3.         What do you think of beauty pageants?  Are they a worthwhile thing?
