ENG197
FINAL TAKE-HOME ESSAY
1. Our
last film of the term is Pan’s Labyrinth.
Create ten really good study questions.
Then take one of the study questions and write a fully-developed
response to it. (You don’t need to answer the others.) Show that you have really developed into a
talented study-question responder. Be
intelligent and thoughtful, of course, but also specific in your use of
examples. (200 words)
2. The
list of this term's films was not designed with any particular theme in
mind. Ultimately the only thing these
films have in common is the fact that they were made in the last year or two,
are available on videotape or DVD, reflect a certain level of quality, and
reveal different facets of your instructor's brain.
But if you look more closely, you might come up
with certain patterns in the films that we've seen this term. I'd like you to zero in on one pattern that
links at least three of this term's films.
The pattern might be a theme, a method of storytelling, a type of
conflict, a character type, a plot element, a setting, a particular use of
music, or something else.
Please discuss this pattern, using examples from
the films. Also, in your conclusion see
if you can make any comments about what this pattern tells us about filmmaking
in 2005-2007. (250 words)
3. You've
been reading reviews all term, writing about them, and writing reviews of your
own. Now,
(a) Having
gone through that experience, what have you learned about the art of
reviewing?
(b) What do you now look for in a
review?
(c)
Read
all of the assigned reviews on Pan’s
Labyrinth, and discuss three of them.
Compare each of them to your ideal of what a review should do.
