English 196 Take-Home Final Winter 2008
By next week I'd like you to write a
400-500 word essay on three of the five directors (Akira Kurosawa,
Martin Scorsese, Mike Leigh, Mira Nair, and Susanne Bier) whom we’ve studied
this term.
For each of the three filmmakers, select and discuss a scene from one of
the director's films that embodies the director's style, presence
(i.e., ways in which the scene is typical of her/his work in general), and world-view,
as you see it. USE the scene as a focus for your discussion of the director.
Although you'll be discussing three
different directors, try to make your essay a unified one--try to come up with
an introduction/conclusion that refers to all three, and, if you'd like, feel
free to compare the three filmmakers throughout the body of your essay.
This is your chance to show me that
you've been keeping up with your reading (Please!! Make me happy!). Bring in the readings whenever possible;
you'll be rewarded with a good grade.
Think of this as a final that you are
writing at home. It shouldn’t take you
more than a couple of hours to write. If
you can type it (double-spaced please), that would be REALLY great..
If you have any questions during the
week, feel free to call me at 503-914-9723 or email me at mdembrow@pcc.edu
Due: Tuesday, March 18,

the cuisine needn’t be from the country of your favorite director.)
