Course outcomes

Students in ESOL 30, Level 3 Integrated Skills, will:

1)  use and understand everyday English expressions;
2)  identify and use some common English grammar structures;
3)  read and understand English paragraphs and longer stories;
4)  write sentences and short paragraphs in English;
5)  work with other students in pairs and groups, speaking only English;
6)  hand in homework regularly and take tests;
7)  learn to use a MyPCC account, the Internet, and language learning software.

Student responsibilities

1.   Come to class every day if possible. Classes begin on Monday, September 21st. Our last class this term is on Monday, December 7th. Call or e-mail the teacher if you cannot come. If you are absent five times, you may be dropped from the class. There is a 15-minute bathroom break (usually 10:30 – 10:45 a.m.) in the middle of the class.

There will be no class on these days:    Wednesday, November 11th (Veterans Day)
                                                              Friday, November 27th (Thanksgiving)

2.    You can drop the class without having to pay by Friday, October 2nd. Do this through your MyPCC account or at the Registration window (CC 208).
 
3.    Every Friday, come to class in Room CT 235, the Language Lab, for the first hour (9:00 – 10:00 a.m.).

4.    Do all the homework by yourself and hand it in on time.

5.    Bring your textbook, lined writing paper, a pen and pencil to every class.

6.    Please turn off cell phones before you come into the class. Also, smoking is not allowed anywhere on the campus!

7.    If you don’t want to buy the textbook, check a copy out of the library and return it at the end of term.

8.    Get a parking permit by the end of the week. They cost $40 at the Business Office, CC 210, or $38 online. Permits for carpooling are $30, or $28 online.

9.    If you are eligible, ask for and fill out a Fee Waiver form by the second week of class.

10.    If you want to, register in room SS 03 for a free conversation group or citizenship class.

11.    If you need special assistance because of a disability, contact the Disability Services office, Room ST 229 - (503) 977-4341.

12.    Speak only ENGLISH in the class, please!

Grading

Students will receive one of the following grades after the end of term:

CM
PR
L
UP
completed the class; moves on to the next level
continues in the class for one more term (repeat)
left the class before a grade could be given
has not shown progress; cannot continue in ESOL

Students may drop the course without having to pay tuition by Friday, October 2nd. Students may drop the course using their MyPCC site.        

You may check your grades for this course on MyPCC by Monday, December 14th.

Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for enrollment in the following ESOL courses:

                ESOL 40: Level 4 Reading
                ESOL 42: Level 4 Writing
                ESOL 44: Level 4 Communication
