Screen Shots: Capturing Images on Your Computer

To Capture a Screen Shot in Windows:

1) Open the application you want to document.

2) Adjust the size of the application screen if desired.

3) To capture a full screen shot (the entire desktop), press the "Print Scrn" button . This will put a screen shot of your desktop, in .bmp format, into your clipboard.

OR

3) To capture a screen shot of the object only (the application window), hold down the "Alt" button and press the "Print Scrn" button. This will put a screen shot of your application window, in .bmp format, into your clipboard.

4) Open your graphic design program, e.g., Windows Paint, or your word processing program, e.g., MS Word.

5) Go to the "Edit" menu. Select "Paste". Your screen shot should appear, ready to move or edit as you wish.

To Capture a Screen Shot Using a Mac:

1) Open the application you want to document.

2) Adjust the size of the application screen if desired.

3) Hold down the "Apple","Shift","3" keys to capture the entire desktop. The image will be saved as a PICT file on your hard drive. Note: The screen may freeze until the image is saved. This is normal.

OR

If your Mac is running System 7.6 (or higher), hold down "Apple", "Shift", "4" keys to capture a portion of the screen. Use the cursor/crosshair to click-and-drag across the area you wish to save. The image will be saved as a PICT file on your hard drive.

4) Open your graphic design or word processing program.

5) "Open" or "Insert" the PICT file. The file will be called PICTURE 1 (or 2, 3, etc.)

Note: While these methods work well, you may lose visual quality in the screen shot. I usually take my screen shots from my graphic design programs (Photoshop, PaintShop Pro). This gives me a better quality screen shot. Also, you can try saving the graphic image in another format.
