Kinds of Composition (Essays)

· Personal Essay - Non-objective, direct report of experience and opinion supporting thesis.

· Narrative/Descriptive Essay - Objective report of events or descriptions supporting thesis.

· Comparison-Contrast Essay - Demonstration of how objects are similar (comparison) or different (contrast), Preference (thesis) developed from argument rather than opinion.

· Classification Essay - Analysis of connections between elements, Usually involves breaking down a large subject into categories for comparison

· Cause and Effect Essay - Explanation of why something is the way it is or happened the way it happened, Support link events to show causes and/or effects.

· Argumentative Essay - A claim supported by evidence seeking to convince or persuade the reader to do, feel or believe something.

· Other "Essays"? - Process Description, Proposals, Research Reports and Studies

· BUT it's only an essay if it supports a thesis!
