Government Agencies Related to Earth Science

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - A branch of the US government responsible for marine and atmospheric research and forecasting on the national level.
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration - A federal agency responsible for aerospace research and exploration.
  • National Park Service - Federal agency that administers national parks in the United States. The site contains the "Nature Net" which provides information about the geology, biology, and natural history of the parks.
  • Oregon Department of Environmental Quality - A state regulatory agency responsible for protecting and enhancing Oregon's water and air quality, for cleaning up spills and releases of hazardous materials, and for managing the proper disposal of hazardous and solid wastes.
  • Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries - A branch of the Oregon state government responsible for a researching state geology, geologic hazards (tsunamis, earthquakes, landsliding, etc.) and regulating mining, oil, natural gas, and geothermal exploration, production and reclamation in the state.
  • US Environmental Protection Agency - A federal agency whose mission is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment. The EPA is responsible for conducting research, monitoring, standard setting, and enforcement activities relevant to this mission.
  • US Forest Service - A federal agency responsible for administering national forests in the United States.
  • US Geological Survey - A branch of the US government responsible for mapping, geologic research, and monitoring water resources nationwide
  • Washington State Department of Natural Resources - The state of washington equivalent to ODGMI.
  • World Meteorological Organization - A branch of the United Nations responsible for weather prediction, tropical storm forecasting, and climate research on a global scale.
