Speechmaking Worksheet 1

The purpose of this assignment is twofold: to indicate how well you understand the theory behind speechmaking, as well as your ability to demonstrate how you will apply them to your speech. This is not an exploratory essay or research paper. Be succinct but clear. A couple of paragraphs to answer each question should be plenty (1a. is one question, 1b. is a second question). The total of three worksheets is worth 20% of your grade.

Answer each question by a) exploring the concept and b) explaining how you will apply the concept to your speech. Use your textbook (CITE!!) to explain/explore/analyze the concept. Use examples from your speech as you are preparing your working outline to explain how you are incorporating the concepts.

1a. According to your textbook, why is it important to be an ethical speaker? What are some of the principles of ethical speaking?
1b. In regard to ethics, what have you specifically considered for your narrative speech? How did you determine the points and the supporting material in your speech were ethical?

2a. According to your textbook, why do we analyze the audience as we prepare a speech? What are a couple of the benefits of knowing to whom you will be speaking? What possible problems could you have if you do not analyze your audience?
2b. What are some ways in which you used the information you gathered after analyzing your audience? How did you incorporate this analysis into your speech? Use specific examples.

3a. According to your textbook, what is the purpose of speech organization? What are some possible organizational patterns for an informative speech; what would the different patterns accomplish?
3b. What organizational pattern did you select for your speech and why did you select this particular one? What are you trying to accomplish using this pattern?
