Tuesday 9/24:
1) Buy the book for next time. Wait to buy the book! The bookstore doesn't have it yet.

2) Read syllabus for quiz next time (Thursday Week 1!)

3) If you want to work ahead: Work on Dictionary Exercise 1 - if you are not sure, SKIP THE QUESTION. Writing on your own paper is OK! A good online dictionary: The MacMillan Dictionary. Listen to the pronunciations of new words and more.

Thursday 9/26:

1) In your book or the handout: Read at home and complete all exercises: pages 4-14
(skip discussion questions, of course. We will discuss in class.)

2) Review Reading Class Vocabulary - I will not collect this. These words could be on the Week 2 quiz.

Quiz 2: Vocabulary, New reading
From the Reading Vocabulary List, you should know "skim, scan, read for comprehension, topic/subject, main idea." You should probably also know "title, sub-title."

Homework Revision: Do you have a homework grade you do not like? PLEASE - write corrections and TURN IT AGAIN! You can turn it on as many times as you need to. Please turn in corrections the NEXT week. I will grade it again and record your better grade. You can get 100% on EVERY assignment!

Tuesday 10/01:

  • Reading Vocabulary list from link above: Learn the first six words. They will be on Quiz 2.
  • Unit 1 Reading 2: Do the reading and all exercises, pages 14 to 21. Here is a scan of the chapter if you need it.

Tuesday 10/08:
Word cards: Create at least 5 more word cards.Use words from pages 11, 20, 31, 39.
Be sure to include the part of speech and related words.
It's a good idea to include the sentence from the book that uses your word.
Also: Review both units!
Check your answers -- use the videos -- and re-read the articles.

Review Unit 2: Reading 1, "Face Blindness" and
Complete Reading 2, "Facial Recognition Technology:" All Exercises, pages 31-40.

Thursday:

Start Unit 3. Read Reading 1, "Livable Cities," and do the exercises up to page 53.

Quiz 3: Some questions to check your understanding of Unit 2. Vocabulary; some repeated words from Unit 1 AND Unit 2. Includes some scanning!

What is a collocation? It is NOT an idiom, it is NOT a proverb, and it is NOT slang.It is just "words that often go together in English." Here is an explanation with a very simple collocation quiz.

Unit 3: Reading 2, "Kazakhstan's City of Tomorrow." Complete exercises, pages 58-60.
Finish the "Word and Phrase" handout from the lab today. (This handout is a little different.) The website is https://www.wordandphrase.info/

Thursday 10/17:

Review Unit 3: Finish the handout. Turn in next class for a grade!
Quiz today focuses on vocabulary and on SCANNING techniques.

COMPLETE THE HANDOUT. Watch one (or more!) of these videos - turn on the closed captions if listening is hard.

Quiz today has a new reading - checking in on reading speed and techniques.

Complete the orange handout - this one includes vocabulary and the "Connections" page. We can discuss this in class next Tuesday, but we will not check ALL the answers before you turn it in!

Tuesday 10/29: Page 66 - 72. Do the reading and all exercises.
(This week's quiz will cover vocabulary from Unit 3 and facts from Unit 4!)
You have the TAKE-HOME quiz for this week. Please finish and bring Thursday!
Finish up Reading 2, Unit 4 ("From Human to Cyborg?"). Do all the exercises!

  1. Review all the "Literary Terms" in the Study Guide I gave you.
  2. Look at the slideshow here.
  3. Read Chapter 1 and 2, "Kim" and "Ana." Do those pages inthe Study Guide. Get ready for a quiz about these chapters next class.


Thursday 11/07: Seedfolks -- Keep going in the novel! Read pages 1-16 again!
Read pages 17-28 (These chapters: Gonzalo, Leona.)
