Each year a Student Advocate from the Sylvania Women's Resource Center chairs the Sylvania Women's History Month Planning Committee. This committee organizes campus programs and activities to recognize and celebrate the diverse and historic accomplishments of women. Thanks to the sacrifice, vision and hard work of the women who came before us, women have won the right to an education, to vote, to equal pay for equal work, to access to fully-funded school sports programs, and to serve in political office. Much work remains to be done, however, to assure that these civil and human rights remain secure and that future generations of women and men will continue to enjoy lives of accomplishment and fulfillment. The 2002 Sylvania Women's History Month celebration included a wide variety of programming demonstrating women's contributions in our local community, including a Women Student Art Show which demonstrated the remarkable creativity and high level of technical excellence of students enrolled in Sylvania's studio art classes and a panel of local women activists who spoke on social justice issues affecting all of us and inspired the audience to take action in their own community.
