The Sylvania Women's Resource Center operates a year long Women's Leadership Program for the Student Advocates who work in the Center. Through this training program Student Advocates develop skills in leadership, peer counseling and advocacy, problem solving, resource research, public speaking, program design and execution, community organizing, and coalition-building. Each Student Advocate learns to empower herself and how to teach other women to empower themselves. The Student Advocates encourage, mentor, support and help many other women stay in school. Additionally, these student leaders produce events and programs to enhance the campus community's understanding of issues and concerns facing women today. The program's construction creates a sense of ownership and responsibility, in each Student Advocate, for the outcomes of the program, as well as a commitment to service and partnership which teaches each one to act on her own account for the good of the organization. The WRC recruits and selects students in the spring term to work in the program the following academic year. For more information on how to become a Student Advocate drop by the Center and talk to an Advocate. She'll tell you all about her job and how to apply for a position in next year's Women's Leadership Program. |
