The Rock Creek
Environmental Studies Center is a natural area within Portland Community
College's Rock Creek Campus in Washington County.
The campus
is located on about 250 acreas. The campus utilizes only 15 percent
of the acreage with the remaining space devoted to a working farm,
cropland, pastureland, and a large natural area. The natural area
includes about 44 acres of woodland, 11 acres of wetland and 44
acres of grasslands.
Several smaller
unique ecosystems are also present at this site including several
springs and a small pond ecosystem. This area provides habitat for
several groups of wildlife including nesting areas for waterfowl,
quail, pheasants, as well as mammals such as: beaver, muskrat, mink,
raccoon, fox and coyote.
Several different
plant communities are present. The site contains Douglas fir dominated
forests, several wetland plant communities and a large grassland
area. These distinct communities result in a high diversity of plants
at the RCESC.
The RCESC is
considered to be an important natural history area by both the Portland
Audubon Society and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
