Slope \(m\)

Why is the letter \(m\) commonly used as the symbol for “slope”? Some believe that it comes from the French word “monter” which means “to climb.” And French has a special place in this topic because Descartes was French. Interestingly, there are reports of French algebra classrooms using \(s\) to stand for slope. When asked why, some say that it's because of the English word “slope.”
