The 4th of July

Americans celebrate Independence Day onskyrocket the 4th of July.  It is a celebration of America’s independence from England on July 4, 1776. The 4th of July is a legal holiday, so on this day each year, banks, schools and all government buildings are closed. Many Americans put U.S. flags up at their houses and some people wear red, white and blue clothes to show their patriotic feelings about their country.  Most Americans have a three-day weekend and often celebrate at picnics or barbecues with family and friends.  Fireworks are an important part of Independence Day celebrations in the United States.
In every major city across the country, there is a large fireworks display.  One of the biggest celebrations is in the capital city, Washington, D.C.  fireworksThe cities of Portland and Vancouver both shoot off fireworks at night.  In some states like Washington, Oregon’s neighbor to the north, you can buy small fireworks to shoot off at your own home.  The 4th of July is a very colorful summer holiday.
