| Missi Jarrar is a PCC student pursuing a liberal arts degree with a creative writing focus. This summer, she completed a Cooperative Education internship with the Pamplin Media Group. During her internship, she wrote and published seven articles in The Beaverton Valley Times and The Times (Tigard), including an 811-word, full-color feature story that made the cover of The Beaverton Valley Times. The feature article was an inspirational piece about a woman in recovery who had turned her life around.
Through her internship, Missi learned how to mold raw information into a cohesive story for publication in popular newspapers with thousands of readers throughout the Portland-Metro area. She learned how to write eye-catching ledes and found new and exciting ways of telling stories. She met and talked with interesting people during interviews, coordinated shoots with photographers, and made invaluable connections with local people in the journalism field. Among her favorite experiences were meeting a woman who had just turned 100-years-old and talking with the young man who pulled a woman from a burning car in Beaverton. "To intern as a reporter is really to have your finger on the pulse of a community," Missi explains. "You are there when news happens. You're helping make the news. It's pretty exciting." |
