English major Nneka Hall stopped by the Cooperative Education office during Spring term to inquire about possible internships in writing. Staff suggested she apply at Beyond Words Publishing in Hillsboro, Oregon. She was accepted as a volunteer summer intern. Her summer duties were varied, including writing editorial comments on two books and writing blurbs for dust jackets. This fall, Nneka was hired part-time in the Public Relations department, which she says is actually more fun than editing. Recently she has been talking to the daughter of Muhammed Ali about promotional events for the biography she has written about her father. Nneka is making initial contacts with people in Louisville, Kentucky for the kick-off event. |
Terre Gift enrolled in the Building Inspection Technology Degree program after more than 20 years in the construction trades. While taking classes, Terre helped form a new Alumni Association at PCC specifically for Building Inspection students ( www.bitaa.org ) and completed a Co-op Work Experience (CWE) with the City of Vancouver, where he assisted in the plan review and inspection departments. From there, he was hired as Building Inspector for Clark County, Washington and assigned to inspect in the Battle Ground, Washington area. When the City of Battle Ground opened up a new Building Department, Terre was hired as lead Building Inspector /Plans Examiner and promoted to Building Official. Terre has hired other PCC graduates and is supervising Co-op students in his new capacity. |

Sara M. Carnahan, a Sylvania transfer student, earned credit for her retail job at Essential Lotions and Oils. She challenged herself at her job by learning new duties, including placing orders on the Internet and bookkeeping procedures. She also learned more about the health benefits of oils used in the shop products. Sara's employer said the Cooperative Education program was great for her business. She had never before had a sales associate take responsibility for Internet ordering and bookkeeping, and now she trains her entire staff to do these things. |
