Case Study #1

Jane first introduced herself to me at a brown bag sponsored by the
CASE Program. The brown bag topic was "High Tech Careers in
Non-High Tech Companies". She approached me after the discussion wondering if she could make an appointment with me. She said she was very interested in web development and wanted help getting connected with business and industry.

We made an appointment and when she arrived it was obvious she was a very motivated person. She moved to the United States about 3 years ago from India with her husband. Her parents arranged her marriage, so when she moved to the US she felt very alone. She had few friends or family and she barely knew her husband. Her husband received a job offer at a high tech company in the US and that is why they moved.

She began taking classes at Portland Community College in the Computer Information Systems discipline. As she explored the subject matter she soon discovered she was interested in web development.
It was obvious by her grades and her enthusiasm that she was committed to the field. When Jane met with me her greatest concern
was her ability to connect with employers that could give her
experience in the web development field because she felt very
isolated and alone in this country.
